Janelle
Monae is an extremely unique artist. She does things her way, and goes with it.
Although more and more artists are starting to be extremely unique, Monae still
stands out. Her album Metropolis is
no different. It would seem that she didn’t listen to musical critiques and
recorded what she felt was best to record. I don’t think she cared about record
sales. She did what she wanted. It paid off. This album is unlike anything I have heard,
although I do not listen to many genres of music.
In
this album, Monae seems to be singing about the future. She focuses on the
science fiction sort of future, rather than the more realistic future. She
could be doing this for a variety of reasons. She could do it because it is
more entertaining than what is probably going to happen. It could be because
she is hoping that is what the future will be like. Or it could be because she truly
believes that is what the future will be like. It really doesn’t matter why she
performed about this type of future, but it would be nice to know to see what
kind of person Monae is.
The
genre of this album is a new-age pop. It makes Monae’s message of the future more
relatable for some audiences. Even if they audience doesn’t know that Monae is
feeding them different ideas about the future, they still enjoy the music. This
is really only true for those who do not have a high enough education to analyze
the music like we are doing. I am not saying that educated can’t enjoy this
album. I am saying that they will be able to analyze what Monae is trying to
say in this album, and this could really be said about any album and type of
music.
