Eric Breedlove Journal #7

In the album "Metropolis" Janelle Monae is telling a story of the life of an android Cindy Mayweather, and her forbidden love for a human.  In an interview Janelle Monae tells some of her purpose and concept for the album, and she stated that part of the reason she sings about androids is because they think androids will be the future due to technological advancements that are always being made.  I also thinkg that she is using this metaphor to show how people can be judgmental about who people love and therefore “disassemble” them in a way.  I think the genre of this album is a kind of soul and r&b blend.  With it being that I think she fits into the genre pretty well in some ways and then not at all in others because some of her songs have a very "jazzy" feels to it.  Janelle Monae’s sense of style clearly portrays her personality and in result the way her music is expressed, because she dresses in suites that you would think men would dress in which shows she is trying to be unique and classy.  However, when looking at her hairstyle it is also obvious that she wants to be different and not seen as an ordinary person.  This may all be portrayed in her music because it could be seen as very different from what the “normal” may be for her genre, but she clearly does not care about that and will do whatever she feels fit to do.  At the same time though, with the instruments that are used in her music she does seem to keep that classy tone in it which reflects her style in clothing.
