Stuart McDonald - Journal 5

We’d just gotten out of a physics lecture in Hahn and decided we’d hop on a bus real quick and pick up some picnic materials.  I bought some bread and other sandwich supplies while my friends picked up some chips and yogurt cups.  We brought our purchases to the duck pond and searched briefly for a suitable spot for our luncheon.  After carefully (or not) traversing the minefield of duck poop, we settled down at a table and hastily made up some sandwiches.  We ate our lunch and worked on some physics problems up until I suddenly realized I had to leave to get to a test.  My friends said they’d clean up and that I should run out of there quickly, so I packed up and nearly sprinted to the classroom.

It was a sunny day like any other for me, nothing special.  I watch people jog by with their dogs and friends and of course there’s the ever-present ducks.  It’s been pretty cold recently, so I haven’t had much work to do.  I had a little bit of hope when a group of guys came by in the afternoon to hang out at the tables for a while.  I noticed they had a few things I could use, but I could only wait and see if they were willing to share.  I remained patient, as I always am, and finally the time came for them to leave.  One of them got up and ran away quickly, but didn't bring me any gifts.  After a short wait, the remaining two fist-bumped each other good bye and another one of them departed, taking with him several items I was keen on receiving.  He left them in the area nearby, just out of my grasp.  At long last, the final patron began approaching me with two items in his hand.  I didn't say a word; I only laid in anticipation for what may finally be mine.  After what seemed an eternity, he relinquished two containers into my possession.  The day was then satisfactory to me; I had filled my purpose.

Today was one of those days where I have to consider whether this is a good neighborhood to live in and start my family.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a big place with plenty of clean, running water and the neighbors don’t ever really bother me.  However, sometimes we get outsiders that visit the area, and some of them only spell trouble for me.  Just today, there were a few of them filling their faces over by some big tables.  I was fine with that, as long as they’re over there and I’m over here.  However, when they started leaving, one of them just threw their mess right into our lawns!  It blew around in the wind and some of it landed in our water, the same water we try to raise families in.  I was feeling really bad about the situation until a new visitor happened to come by and help take away the mess that I certainly could not move on my own.  I think that as long as there is a balance of visitors like that with the others, I may be able to stick it out here.
