Mickenzi Schank Sources

Regular search: The Greatest Game: Why the World Loves Soccer, and America Doesn't
1.      The John Carlin is a well renowned writer who has traveled the world to research and write about many different topics such as the genocide in Rwanda, the social revolution in South Africa, food, wine and soccer.  He also wrote the book Playing the Enemy, which was the basis for the movie Invictus, and he writes a weekly column about soccer for Spain’s leading newspaper, El Pais.
2.      It is an online article that was written for a sports news website, SB Nation, whose audience is people interested in sports news in America.  The website is not well known and the article was published November 16th of 2012.
3.      This article is reliable mainly because of its author.  If the site, SB Nation, were to publish an article by an author without the credentials that John Carlin has then it would not be a very trustable source.  But the fact that Carlin has traveled so much and knows so much about soccer makes this article a good source because it is written from a perspective that much more broad than writers U.S. who have only experienced American soccer.  Carlin includes quotes, figures and statistics but there are no citations to where he obtained these figures, which is disheartening but understandable due to the audience.
4.      I believe that this article is appropriate for my topic, but it can only play a limited role.  This article would be a great source to show how soccer is more than just a sport because of the passion and culture behind it, which Carlin has experienced firsthand and accounted for through different interviews.   But I will refrain from using any numbers or statistics that he provides because he did not cite them therefore I am unsure if the numbers he provided can be trusted.

Scholar search: We can’t ‘Just do it’ alone! An analysis of Nike’s (potential) contributions to anti-racism in soccer
1.      The authors of this journal article, Floris Müller, Liesbet van Zoonen and Laurens de Roode, are from the Amsterdam School of Communication Research.  They are obviously well educated and have put together a research project that has been approved by people at the institution.
2.      The Amsterdam School of Communication Research is most likely not well known but the fact that they are an academic institution means that they must follow the rigorous standards to obtain a neutral point of view associated with academia. The article was published in the February, 2008 edition of the Media, Culture & Society journal.
3.      The text is reliable because its purpose is to inform on the topic of soccer and culture.  It is not sponsored by any commercial entity and does not have any apparent biases.  Also there is a lengthy section for references and works cited to support the statements and numbers used in the paper.
4.      This source is appropriate for my project because the information was scientifically and systematically collected in a way that attempted to remain as neutral as possible.  There are numerous citations that can also be checked for credibility, which means that all parts of the article can assist me in supporting my statements or providing certain points of view.  The only downside is that the article is lengthy and somewhat technical making reading the article long and tedious.  Also information is not always clearly stated and must be extracted, which is an acquired skill.
