If reading and writing were people, I’d have two new
friends. Each has a personality, which
can sometimes feel like an attitude.
Just like when you meet a new person, it takes a while to get to know
them, and really understand their reasoning.
Writing, for example, seems easy once you have an idea, or the courage
to go talk to the person. Then you have
the simple conversation, introduce yourselves, and hope you find something in
common. If you’re lucky, you hit it off
with that person and never run out of things to say. However, that doesn’t always happen. Meeting new people can get painfully awkward
and become forced without a common interest.
Writing and I have had this relationship before, but just as friendships
grow, with more and more practice, it gets easier and easier to communicate amongst
each other.
Writing and I first met at right about the same time I
became friends with reading. It has been
a long time now, and we’ve had our fights and major battles, but also had our
successes. My feelings towards writing
have often correlated with my feelings towards my English teacher. Although
this past fall I did not take 1105, my relationship with writing grew in a
different, more scientific way. Lab
reports were a newfound corner of writing I had never experienced, but just
like everything, with time the communication has flowed with more and more
ease. Without English 1105, I am afraid
writing and I had a falling out this fall, and we’re about to become
reconnected this semester. My hope is that
we we’re close enough that no matter how long we we’re apart, we can just pick
back up and be as close as ever. Writing
and reading are key skills that will lead to success in any major, and I am
looking forward to improving my ability to effectively communicate with
others.
