My experience with reading and
writing is very much a love-hate relationship. I grew up in a military family
so we moved a lot. For this reason, my two sisters and I were homeschooled for
the majority of our childhood. This being said, my mom taught me how to read
and write. I hated English growing up
but my mom focused heavily on it and would make us do extensive exercises
regarding grammar every day. Looking back, I guess it was a good thing, but I
do not have fond memories of it. In high school, I took AP Language and
Composition. I feel like that was one of the most beneficial classes I took in
high school. I honestly believe that it helped me in all areas of school, not
just in English. We read 14 books the whole year, which was a little over
bearing at times. I think my favorite
book we read all year in that class was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott
Fitzgerald. I am ridiculously excited for the movie, staring Leonardo DiCaprio,
to come out this year! One of the best aspects about the class however, was the
amount of time we spend analyzing the text and really understanding things in a
deeper way through conversation. We had many discussions and heated debates. I
did not take 1105 but I am looking forward to this English class. I hope to
further my skills in writing, which will hopefully carry over to other classes
as well. When reading a book, I can either get really into it, and read it in a
couple days, or I absolutely hate it, and it takes me months to finish. This is
the case with writing as well. If I am passionate and interested in the subject
I am writing about, I can write pages upon pages of material, but if I am
disinterested, it is very difficult for me to produce a quality paper in a
short period of time. Thus the love-hate relationship I have with reading and
writing.
