Sofia Gasperino Journal #5

I scurry around on the ground with my friends. We chase each other up and down the trees. I make a comfortable home out of leaves and twigs up high in the branches of the tallest tree so my family and I are safe from predators. I feel safest in the trees because I blend in with them; that is usually where I run to when I am scared. I can see everything when I am up high in the branches of trees. I collect food on the ground and bring it back home.  My tail helps me keep my balance when climbing on branches and my hands allow me to carry acorns.

I am the biggest animal out here. I walk around and admire the nature that is in front of me. I sit on a bench to relax and read a book. I don’t come into close contact with the other animals here unless maybe to feed them. I see everything from a far away perspective. I see the pond as a whole and the tree as a whole but I don’t truly understand the complex ecosystem that exists here. I don’t live here like the other creatures, I only come here on occasion.

I walk on land with my two feet but my favorite thing to do is swim. I have water fights with my friends and we like to chase each other. It makes me sad to see pollution in the waters and on the banks.  When I come onto land, I look at the trees but I cannot climb them. I can fly but not as well as my cousins can. I eat from the bottom of the lake and clean my feathers with my beak. Sometimes, large animals feed me bread; the mean ones chase me. I can be very loud when I talk to my friends.
