Joel Foley, Journal Number 1

Writing and I have had a touch and go relationship at best over the last couple of years. I learned how to write just like everyone else did with the big dashed lines for your upper and lower case script, but I never seemed to love writing on my own. As a result, the only time I do any writing is on sticky notes or in class when a prompt is assigned. I did however, love to read. I started reading for fun with the Harry Potter series and followed those books with The Lord of the Rings. After those two series I would pick up a few books now and then but never really got hooked on a series. I consider myself a fairly strong reader and I have learned in my previous classes how to analyze the texts a little deeper than I had been doing.
In my past English classes I have had mixed experiences. I loved some classes and hated others but I was a big fan of my most recent AP Literature class. We spent the entire year reading both plays and novels and then discussing them in class and with our assigned writings. I was actually able to test out of 1105 with my scores on that test. I learned a lot about analyzing the texts we read in that AP class and look forward to reading in 1106. I can manage a decent paper as long as I have a chance to do both brainstorming and revisions before I submit.
I sometimes struggle to be extremely imaginative in my writing when the prompt is not of my choosing. My sophomore teacher Ms. Sim loved to point out how direct to the point my writings were. I tend to be somewhat straightforward with those kinds of prompts. However, this year I will try my best to make my writings for this class interesting. This will be my first college level English class and I can honestly say that it looks like it will be one of my favorites this semester and a good break from the Engineering curriculum.
