Kevin Stefanye- Journal #1

Writing and I have a somewhat rocky relationship. I like writing, and I usually find it fun, but when I’m forced to write something I don’t want to write, it can be a painful experience. I consider myself a good writer, especially when I’m writing about something that I like. I learned to read the alphabet when I was about 4. My parents sent me to a daycare, where I learned my basics. Around that time, I became obsessed with dinosaurs, and I wanted to know everything about them, so my mom bought some dinosaur books and we read them together almost every night. I learned how to write in kindergarten, which is when I was taught to write words and weak sentences.
Until I got to middle school, I thoroughly enjoyed reading book series such as A Series of Unfortunate Events, Warriors, and Animorphs, but for some reason, when I got to middle school, my appetite for books began to diminish. I think it was because for the first time, I was being given books to read for school, and I guess I didn’t like the idea of reading a book that I didn’t choose. My favorite books would have to be the “A series of Unfortunate Events” series. I was completely unable to put those books down once I started them, and I blew through them in a matter of days.
I did not take 1105, and this is my first college English course! I did not take AP English in high school, but I passed out of 1105 with my SAT, and I will get a retro credit for it if I pass this class with at least a “C”. English is one of my favorite subjects, but one thing I despise about English courses is citing my work in MLA format, which in my opinion is a massive pain. I’m sure we will be doing a lot of that this semester, so I guess I’ll have to get used to it.
So far, I have learned to write like a high school student, but I am excited to finally take my writing to the next level! I genuinely enjoy writing for pleasure, and once I become a better writer, I will begin to write a lot more!
